Set up in 2001, the .NAME top-level extension is the only one intended for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are known by. At first, just 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed 3rd-level domain names remained active.
